Winter days can be long and monotonous for a family, with work days and school days seeming to run together and home time becoming boring and tedious. For many families, a winter getaway may be just the solution to the cold weather blues and is a great opportunity for everyone to relax and enjoy new experiences together.
From busy urban centres to beach getaways to outdoor fun at numerous family-friendly winter resorts, there is an endless variety of family-friendly winter destinations from which to choose.
Top five winter destinations for families
There is a wide variety of beach resorts throughout the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and the Pacific, that cater to families exclusively, with planned activities and unique amenities galore. For something less planned, amid a natural beach setting, there is the beautiful Sanibel Island on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Along with its sister island, Captiva, Sanibel Island is located not far away from the city of Fort Meyers. Sanibel Island has a unique geographic position that makes it a veritable net for capturing beautiful, large seashells; they wash up on the beach almost constantly. There are also 26 miles of bike trails and a large wildlife preserve.
Children and their parents, who are fond of trains and railroads, may enjoy a ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. A variety of different train ride experiences are offered throughout the year, with the most popular being the Polar Express Experience during the winter and holiday months. Children are even urged to wear their pajamas as they enjoy reliving the story, greet Santa and sip on hot cocoa.
Nothing says wintertime like skiing and first-timers cannot ask for a better getaway than a trip to the slopes surrounding Lake Tahoe, in California. Larger resorts, such as Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, are particularly well suited to families and offer a range of outdoor fun options for all age groups. Lake, Tahoe is surrounded by a number of natural areas, state parks and forests, providing opportunities for exploration and adventure.
Dubbed the “Live Show Capital of the World”, the resort city of Branson, MO, offers family fun and entertainment in a relaxing and family-friendly environment. Live shows, featuring artists from the past five decades; theme park attractions, including the 19th century charms of Silver Dollar City and much more are all available here, with plenty of itineraries and options to fill many years’ worth of winter holidays.
Sometimes, the choice of vacation destination all comes down to timing. Travelling to specific cities or locales during certain months of the winter can mean finding true bargains on attractions, dining and of course, cheap hotels and New York City is no exception to this rule. While the months of January and February can be particularly cold and blustery, most of the best of NYC is still available indoors and comfortably warm. From the many museums on the Upper East Side to the shops on 14th Street and the high-end stores of Fifth Avenue, including the world-famous FAO Schwarz toy store, to the endless variety of stores, activities and experiences in and around Times Square, New York City is a melting pot of sights, sounds and unforgettable experiences for the whole family.
