1974 and the price of alcohol
1974, I was young! Ok I was 5, yep now you can work out just how ancient I really am! Anyway a client showed me a paper the other day with alcohol prices from Augustus Barnett 1974 and it made me laugh at just how cheap they seem. I guess in reality they weren’t but they sure do now.
I know about 20 years ago a price comparison was done on a perm, and if it had followed the same increases as the cost of living, then the perm would’ve cost over £3k!!!
Let me know what you think to the prices! I know I remember the price of certain sweets that we used to buy and 10p actually brought you quite a decent amount of sweets, these day’s you’ll be lucky to get 1 sweet!
39p for a bottle of wine? Boy it really makes you wonder just what it actually tasted like!
But it’s good to see some of the same brands still going strong 39 years later! Even if they do seem expensive now-a-days!
I’ve done a bit of research in to Augustus Barnett and found they were yet another victim of being taken over by the big guns and just seemed to disappear within another brand identity. It sold for a reported £40m! But led to the closure of it’s Burton offices and the loss of 130 jobs there, plus the loss of jobs within it’s stores.
I also found this reference to their delivery vans online and thought I would share it with you, be warned it may offend!
“We used to have a delivery vehicle with the side painted ‘Augustus Barnett’ ‘Britain’s biggest cut price wine merchant’ but if the side doors were opened in a certain way it would then read ‘Britain’s biggest ****’.
Once the drivers were aware of this they always opened the doors this way and all around you could see people laughing.”
